The Singhs
Shameeza and Michael Singh were devastated when their son King, the eldest of their three children, was diagnosed with leukemia. As a result, King needed a procedure to put a port in his chest. However, because the Singhs were not able to compare prices in advance, they were unable to choose the most affordable option. The result? They are buried under staggering medical debt.
“Although our insurance pays 80%, we care about price because we pay the rest,” said Michael. “The copays and ER visits add up. We put everything on a credit card until it gets rejected.”
The Singhs now live paycheck to paycheck, have enormous credit card debt, are in collections, and on the brink of filing for bankruptcy. They know price transparency would have empowered them to plan family finances while fighting for their son’s life.
