PRA Sends Letter to President Biden Opposing HHS’ Enforcement Discretion of No Surprises Act Provision

Today, PRA sent a letter to President Biden to express our disappointment and grave concerns regarding the recent announcement that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will not enforce a critical provision of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 requiring co-providers and co-facilities to give uninsured, self-pay individuals advance good faith estimates of the price of their care.

The letter explains how HHS’ enforcement discretion hurts uninsured individuals who desperately need the consumer protection of upfront prices, worsening health equity. It points out how this move by HHS and the agency’s lack of enforcement of the hospital price transparency rule run counter to the Biden administration’s strong support of healthcare price transparency.
